Buddies in Bad Times Theatre:

A Dramatic Shift to Digital

Challenge: Buddies in Bad Times, a Canadian professional theatre company, is the largest and longest-running queer theatre in the world. They’re devoted to the promotion of queer theatrical expression. While the organization has always been at the forefront of performance, they needed some help determining how they can better leverage digital for operations, marketing, sales, audience engagement, and more.

Solution: Through funding provided from a Canada Council of the Arts Grant Program, Buddies contracted me to help them with their digital strategy. We started with a digital maturity assessment to understand where the organization was when it comes to key digital categories. From there, we developed a digital needs assessment, which outlined their priorities and helped define goals.

After gathering feedback from the organization and its key stakeholders, I developed a fifty-page digital strategy playbook outlining how the theatre can leverage digital to improve existing processes, make operations more efficient and streamlined, and develop a digital code of conduct. Part of the process was defining a vision for the organization when it comes to digital as well as recommending specific tools and resources to help them achieve their goals. The playbook also included examples from other organizations in the not-for-profit space to demonstrate best practices as well as an appendix of links with useful tutorials for implementing recommendations.
